The whole veteran identity some of these "Cold War Era" guys fall back on is meant to compensate for doing what amounted to a pain in the ass job they had for a few years as a kid. If he actually saw combat, he'd probably be a better adjusted person who wasn't looking to brag about it and wear boot fucking t-shirts and hats everywhere.

The weird part is you'd think they'd look at the people today who've actually been to war with respect. Instead, they invent reasons as to why today's combat veterans are "snowflakes," in a "softer" military to make themselves feel better about serving during a much easier, safer time.
