Why did they choose to make the Ellie character completely unlikable?

I enjoyed both games.

Even beyond Bella Ramsey having The Mask-face, the character is completely unlikable and irresponsible. There’s zero charm. Zero redeeming attributes. I actively root against her.

She comes off as a spiteful selfish bitch that endangers everyone else’s lives.

Yeah the game character had some of that, but she also had some charisma.

How does the production team not realize this?
