Sparks is genuinely one of my all-time favourite bands, they're fucking great. That recent documentary by Edgar Wright sucked though.

The fact that they keep jumping between genres helps keep their music fresh.

I disagree with that. Lil' Beethoven is one of their best albums and it was their nineteenth album, made 30 years into Sparks' career.

Love Sparks as well, brotherman. And also agree, the documentary sucked for the most part. The parts with the actual band were decent, but why would I give a shit what all of the celebrities think of Sparks? Who cares? For example, why am I hearing a Paul F Tompkins anecdote from his teen years about some girl he was dating? Who gives a shit? I heard Tom Scharpling say "after watching that documentary, I think I like Sparks less" and I feel the same way.

It was nice to hear about Sparks's mid years, though. I don't think I've ever listened to any of their albums from like 1982 through Lil Beethoven, so that was informative if nothing else. Halfnelson through No. 1 In Heaven is my bread and butter.

I fucking hated Patton Oswalt being in the documentary.
The Sparks Twitter account at the time had like 7k followers so they'd retweet any mention they got and I remember them retweeting Oswalt after the documentary announcement about how he'd never even heard of them before but he was going to start listening now because Wright was making a documentary about them.
And then he's in the fucking documentary as a 'fan'.

It was nice to hear about Sparks's mid years, though. I don't think I've ever listened to any of their albums from like 1982 through Lil Beethoven, so that was informative if nothing else.

You should check out In Outer Space and Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins, they're among my favourite albums of theirs.

Wait, really? That's infuriating. No one needs to hear from any of these "fans" to begin with. But to choose a late comer like Patton is nuts.

I really should do a full trip through all of the albums. I love the single "When Do I Get To Sing My Way" and the way they set that song up in the documentary might be the only part I really enjoyed. Is anything after Hippopotamus worth listening to? I fell back out after that one.
