I understand the points you’re raising, and that people deserve to be paid more, but the actual reality is there are many people who are not worth the minimum wage, and raising it just means they are permanently removed from employment.

Anyway, when countries say they only charge X% duties and taxes, they are taking the average number across all 99 chapters, including shit like “01063900” live reptiles - stuff we aren’t importing or exporting, but it brings the average down. If you do the numbers on goods we actually buy and sell like processed food and car parts, it’s WAY higher than the numbers you see on the headlines.

We have duty free tariffs on the component parts Raytheon needs to build missiles, but have high rates on children’s car seats, which are mandatory for parents, but the raw components to make them in the US are even higher.
