I have no actual evidence of this but I'm 99% sure that Del Curry had no idea that "Stephen" is the correct spelling for "Steven" when he named Steph Curry. I think he thought he was doing the typical black thing of just altering the spelling and a syllable of a normal name to make it less white (like Stefon Diggs or Stephon Marbury) and failed.
