They went with Keanu because the studio previously had a big hit movie with him called “Speed” that of course Pat didn’t see. People look at Keanu like he’s a typical guy from the Valley in LA because that’s what he is. He also claims Matrix “came out of nowhere” even though it had an ad in the Super Bowl and a “viral” (for the time) campaign on the internet with whatisthematrix.com and a soundtrack featuring who was popular at the time for Hard Rock / Nu Metal (Rob Zombie, Rage Against The Machine, etc)

I’ve never seen someone that is so stupid and out of touch with current trends and pop culture while claiming the opposite like Pat. Where once you had symbolism, metaphor and reflection, you now have big bright lasers and giant spaceships or robots that go "Boom".

Will Smith was one of the picks but I think they had him in mind for Morpheus (or maybe they had Morpheus be a white guy if smith would be in as a black neo etc) and I think you’re right - he turned it down because he didn’t get it and did Wild Wild West instead. I know the brothers (who are now sisters) wanted Johnny Depp first real bad even though outside of the pirates of the Caribbean franchise (which hadn’t happened yet) his movies didn’t make much money and Depp probably didn’t want to do it.

Speed was the big hit but Devils Advocate was a modest hit and more recent than Speed so they felt that’s good enough. I know he had a movie or two in between Speed and Devils that didn’t do well but the recent hit helped him get the part.
