It kinda makes sense: a lunar calendar is a way more useful way of keeping time in an arid desert than in higher latititudes, where seasons can be tracked by the movement of the sun.

There's a whole explanation in the Quran about how the rock fits into their theology, but you could easily imagine practical reasons for doing so: local Arabs (including Muhammed) would've still grown up around the Ka'aba and valued it. Unlike all the other pagan idols, it was something that could easily be adapted into the new monotheistic religion. That would've help bridge the gap between the old beliefs and the new, and it would've also helped maintain the status (symbolically and economically) of their hometown as an important site for pilgrims.
