Most army deployments were for a year plus at that time and I’m guessing she got sent back at the 4 month mark for getting in trouble .

During this specific time period in the war, there were US soldiers carrying AKS. There were not enough primary or secondary firearms available.
Generally this wasn't with infantry, but sometimes was especially if the reason was to hide rifle report.

In the early days of the war it makes sense that non infantry units would use whatever weapons they could get their hands on. Especially since the insurgents started their shenanigans pretty quickly after Iraq was conquered

Just read the article. Sounds pretty limited, but understandably newsworthy, as it was a ridiculous situation for a superpower. Well, the whole OIF situation was ridiculously stupid. I know from older NCO's at the time that the Clinton era made it really rough to get adequate funding for training and maintenance at the Company level. Plus with the Army being so huge and bureaucratic, it took time for weapons and parts to trickle down to the actual combat units during Bush's first term. Unfortunate stuff.
