Stern is a neurotic cheapskate heeb with a massive ego, but he was right when he said all of these staffers are shit and only famous because of him
The exception being Artie who came to the show already having a career
I still think it’s pathetic and a bad look for Stern. Back when he used to flip out about them making appearances when he refused to pay them well was an odd stance to take.

Robin, Jackie, Billy, and Fred all had careers as well. Richard Christie was a heavy metal drummer and good enough to tour with major bands. He basically gave up a touring music career to be a Stern flunkie. Artie actually didn't have much of a career left when he started working for Stern. He had burned bridges with everyone including Norm at that point for stealing his gambling money.

When Stern started in radio he had to make live appearances every weekend as Hop-along Howie and other early versions of himself. His own Spuds Buckley phase. The only difference was that his pay increased and he could cease the live gigs and appearances. Unlike his flunkies which can barely make ends meet and often quit his show over pay.

Richard Christie was working as an apprentice electrician & living in a storage unit in Florida before winning the "Win John's Job" contest.

Being a successful heavy metal musician was super niche and didn't pay shit.

I haven't listened to Stern in 10-15 years but I remember Sal complaining about how broke he was and how his wife wanted to leave him over it and he was making triple the money as a stockbroker etc.
Sal was never a stockbroker. He worked in boiler rooms scamming the elderly out of their retirement money. No doubt that Sal made mid six figures some years but he also came close to decades in jail. Dominic Barbara on air basically blabbed that Sal was only not in jail because Dominic got him out of his legal issues. He was literally the guy cold calling senior citizens to rip them off for everything that they had.

Richard was doing festival tours for 10K-20K sized audiences for years. And doing club gigs with 500-1,000 people every week. The reason Richard lived like a caveman is because he's a disgusting slob who eats roadkill and never showers. Richard said on air he hated showering and bathing and brushing his teeth. He is just a filthy hillbilly mess. Richard moved to NYC because he had taken a hiatus from touring. Had nothing to do with money.

Also the Get John's Job vote was almost certainly rigged. Richard moved to NYC for the contest knowing he was getting a full time job.

Richard Christy is a phenomenal metal drummer, but his accomplishments are not great. He played with Death/Control Denied on one album each before the band lead died. Death are very influential, but they were not arena sellers. Festivals have high attendance but that doesn't mean Richard Christy got paid. He was always a hired gun/journeyman for somewhat well known bands. Iced Earth are kind of well known and he played on maybe three albums. His actual bands amounted to nothing until after Stern where could have a project like Charred Walls of the Damned which still isn't popular. He had a good reputation and was a very good drummer, but there is no way he made a living in metal. He was a hired gun for short periods.

Look at that career. It isn't stellar. He did play on a few successful albums though.

No one is thinking that he was a millionaire. But the reason he didn't purchase a house and was living in a storage facility was that he was told by WXRK that they would hire him after the Win John's Job Contest. Meaning that his employment was guaranteed that he didn't just move to NYC not knowing if he might get a job working in radio. He made the big move with job security. He had enough money to move to NYC and work for the peanuts that Stern pays everyone.

In that contest literally every fan site had Sal dominating the votes. And practically every staff member picked Sal to win. Richard won the online vote and the reaction in the room was disbelief from everyone including Sal outright saying it was fixed. Later Sal would be hired anyways. And proving that the votes really didn't matter, Shuli who got a whopping 1% of the votes, was hired on the show full time despite being hated by anyone with a pulse and having absolutely zero discernible talent.

Shuli has to be the least liked staff member. He sucks.

I have a friend I grew up with that played guitar in hardcore bands and has toured the world and I think even had a sponsorship or something with ESP LTD guitars (the ones metallica plays)

He still lives with his parents.

Even Richard Christy admitted while he was in a band and touring he played in bands that weren’t selling a ton of tickets / playing large venues. Even playing a festival while is something impressive remember a lot of these festivals have a good amount of bands near the bottom that are probably breaking even / losing money doing festivals on the tour costs.

I wonder what they make a year and if they could have done better if they left 10 years ago to start a podcast. Then every year or so release a prank call cd.
I think stern once got upset with them years ago because they were holding back on playing certain calls on the air like they were planning on releasing a prank call CD (similar to Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson had with their terrorizing telemarketers CDs)

I remember Stern once put Shuli in the Jackie / Artie chair for 3 days something like 12 or 13 years ago. Obviously that didn’t lead to anything
